Jyotish is among the oldest bodies of knowledge — a limb of the Vedas, called Vedanga Jyotish, the eye of the Vedas. The rishis studied the movement of the grahas and nakshatras and their bearing on human life, and set the sky at the moment of birth down as the Kundli.
