The Dham

Baba Garibnath Dham

धाम का इतिहास

Baba Garibnath Dham stands near Purani Bazar in Muzaffarpur — the Shiva temple devotees call “Bihar ka Deoghar”. Here Mahadev is worshipped as Garibnath, Lord of the poor, and the Shivling as a Manokamna Linga that fulfils the wish brought before it. Mantraya was begun by pujaris of this Dham.

History

How the Dham came to be

As told at the Dham and in the families who have served it.

  1. c. 300 years ago

A forest and seven peepal trees

    लगभग 300 वर्ष पूर्व

By tradition the Dham is about three hundred years old. Where it now stands was dense forest, and in that forest stood seven peepal trees. It was while these were being felled that a great Shivling came to light, and the owner of the land is said to have been directed in a dream to begin worship on the spot.

  2. Older than the linga

    The Kalpavriksha

    कल्पवृक्ष

The wish-granting tree that stands in the temple courtyard is held to be older still than the manifestation of the Shivling. Devotees tie a thread to it when they bring a prayer, and return to untie it when the prayer is answered.

  3. Manokamna Linga

    Garibnath, Lord of the poor

    मनोकामना लिंग

Mahadev is worshipped here as Garibnath and Garibeshwar — the Lord of the poor. Because the Shivling is believed to grant every manokamna laid before it, the Dham at Muzaffarpur has long been spoken of across the state as “Bihar ka Deoghar”.

  4. From about 1960

    The Kanwar from Sonepur

    काँवर यात्रा

From about 1960 kanwariyas began carrying Ganga jal from Pahleja Ghat at Sonepur to bathe the linga here — a journey of roughly 70 km, which Dak Bam pilgrims cover in around twelve hours. Through the month of Shravan the whole road to the Dham runs saffron.

  5. 2006 — today

    The Dham today

    न्यास एवं प्रबंधन

In 2006 the Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts took the temple under its administration, and a trust of eleven members now looks after the Dham's affairs. The shrine follows the Nagara style of temple building, and stands on Garibnath Dham Road, near Purani Bazar in Muzaffarpur.

The Bleeding Linga

रक्त-लिंग की कथा

Where the Dham now stands there was once dense forest, and in it seven peepal trees. As woodcutters felled them, an axe struck what seemed to be stone — and a red, blood-like stream is said to have flowed from it, revealing a great Shivling.

Why “Garibnath”

नाम की कथा

The Lord of this Dham is called Garibnath and Garibeshwar — the Lord of the poor — a name devotees trace to a humble bhakt whose prayer was answered here. The Shivling is revered as a Manokamna Linga, one that fulfils the wish brought before it, and for that reason Muzaffarpur’s Dham is known across Bihar as “Bihar ka Deoghar”.

The Clerk’s Daughter

कन्यादान की कथा

A clerk lost his livelihood when the merchant he worked for failed, and could not arrange his daughter’s marriage. He kept his daily darshan at the Dham all the same.
