Prachalit Kathayein

प्रचलित कथाएँ

The stories told of Baba Garibnath — passed from devotee to devotee, and kept alive at the Dham.

The Shivling of Baba Garibnath adorned with chandan and sacred thread

The Bleeding Linga

रक्त-लिंग की कथा

Where the Dham now stands there was once dense forest, and in it seven peepal trees. As woodcutters felled them, an axe struck what seemed to be stone — and a red, blood-like stream is said to have flowed from it, revealing a great Shivling. Devotees believe the mark of that axe can still be seen on the linga.

Why “Garibnath”

नाम की कथा

The Lord of this Dham is called Garibnath and Garibeshwar — the Lord of the poor — a name devotees trace to a humble bhakt whose prayer was answered here. The Shivling is revered as a Manokamna Linga, one that fulfils the wish brought before it, and for that reason Muzaffarpur’s Dham is known across Bihar as “Bihar ka Deoghar”.

The Clerk’s Daughter

कन्यादान की कथा

A clerk lost his livelihood when the merchant he worked for failed, and could not arrange his daughter’s marriage. He kept his daily darshan at the Dham all the same. As the wedding day came, the clothes, ornaments and provisions he had no means to buy arrived at his door — brought, devotees say, by Baba himself, so that no daughter of his bhakt would go unmarried.

The Mason and the Jata

जटा की कथा

During construction work at the shrine, a mason digging beside the linga felt matted locks — jata — beneath the stone, and fainted where he stood. He bathed, asked Baba’s forgiveness, and returned to finish the work; from that moment, it is said, the task went on without the least difficulty.

The Serpent at Aarti

नागदेव की कथा

At one morning aarti, a serpent is said to have descended from the tree above the shrine and remained there, still, for the whole of the worship — disappearing the moment the aarti ended. Devotees at the Dham keep a photograph of that morning.

The Sleeping Driver

चालक की कथा

A railway driver, lost in devotion through the night of Shivratri, fell asleep at the temple though his train was due to run. He woke to be told the train had already left Muzaffarpur — driven, in his own form, by Baba. He gave up his service on the railways and spent the rest of his life in the seva of the Dham.
